Holograph vs witnessed wills in Canada
The difference between a holograph will and a witnessed will is about how the document is made and signed. It is not a choice between Islamic and non-Islamic inheritance: either suitable format can express religious wishes, subject to the applicable law.

What makes a will holograph?
Where recognized, a holograph will relies on the maker’s own handwriting and signature. Québec’s guidance specifically excludes a computer-generated document or a pre-existing form from this route. Typing a document and adding a handwritten signature does not turn it into a holograph will.
What changes with a witnessed will?
A witnessed format can use a prepared written document, followed by the required signing process. Alberta’s guidance describes signing in the presence of two witnesses who also sign in your presence. Use the instructions for your own province and circumstances rather than assuming one procedure applies everywhere.
Province comes before convenience
BC’s ordinary will requirements include witnesses, while Ontario has an express holograph provision. Québec also has a separate notarial form. These differences mean the fastest-looking option in a website menu may not be the appropriate legal route. Follow the province guide and obtain advice if you have an existing informal document.
Compare the practical work
A handwritten route requires you to reproduce the intended instructions accurately. A prepared witnessed draft requires attention to the signing process and witness eligibility. Both need a complete review of names, executors, beneficiaries and bequests. Neither solves unclear wording, missing property information or an incorrect family configuration.
After choosing the format
Treat the download as preparation for completion, not the final step. Read the entire document, resolve unanswered questions and follow the signing instructions. Keep the completed original secure and tell the appropriate person where it is. If you later change the document, check the required process rather than making informal edits that could create uncertainty.
